Custodial & Judiciary

Supporting justice. Shaping better spaces.

Creating secure, accessible and dignified environments.

BTP has extensive experience delivering projects across the Ministry of Justice and HM Courts and Tribunal Service estate. Working as lead architect for major contractors, we have remodelled and refurbished live courts, created judicial and office accommodation, and upgraded and repurposed custodial facilities nationwide.

Our portfolio includes Priory Court in Birmingham, where we created 12 hearing rooms, 19 judiciary rooms and improved public facilities, alongside projects at Oxford Combined Courts, Swindon Magistrates’ and Combined Courts, and the Grade I listed Victoria Law Courts. Our conservation expertise also extends to Lancaster Castle’s historic Shire Hall.

Led by Director Simon Dennis, who has more than 20 years’ specialist judicial and custodial experience, our security-cleared team understands the complex requirements of sensitive, operational environments. We carefully address security, acoustics, accessibility, circulation, phasing and continuity of service, while sensitively integrating modern facilities within existing and listed buildings.

Our flexible, sustainable designs balance operational efficiency and robust security with the dignity and wellbeing of everyone who uses these spaces. Through close collaboration with clients, contractors and stakeholders, we create safe, adaptable facilities that meet evolving operational needs and deliver lasting value.

I joined BTP in 2015, bringing a portfolio of Judicial and Custodial refurbishment projects to the practice, which I still continue to develop, including several conservation projects. More recently, I have also developed my role as a Principal Designer on both HRB & Non-HRB projects, particularly for custodial and education projects.

Since Graduating from Dundee University in 1996 I have gained considerable experience as an architect through completing a broad range of project types and sizes; from domestic projects for private clients to multi-million pound construction programmes for Government bodies and International commercial organisations throughout the UK. My predominant skills are in job running, detailed design, conservation projects and project management.

Outside of the office I am an enthusiastic hill-walker and climber and enjoy the outdoors, from gentle country strolls, ticking off Wainwrights and Munros, or summitting international peaks. I am also a keen traveller with a collection of passport stamps from Iceland to Antarctica.

I joined BTP in September 2024 having graduating from the University of Huddersfield. My previous work with a conservation contractor gave me practical experience on site, including traditional lime mortar repairs at Little Moreton Hall.

Since joining BTP, I’ve worked on projects ranging from new-build housing to a major re-roofing scheme at the Grade II-listed Bootle Town Hall. I’m continuing to build my experience while studying part-time for my master’s degree at the University of Lincoln.

Outside of the office, I enjoy going to the gym, playing golf and padel, as well as listening to vinyls from my ever-growing collection.
