In the Spotlight: Interview with Jack Bourne

1. What is your role at BTP?
I am an Architectural Assistant at BTP and have mainly worked on retrofit, refurbishment, conservation, and accessible new build projects. I joined the practice in August 2025 after completing my BA at the University of Liverpool, and after gaining part time experience as a labourer over a few years.
During my time here I’ve gained lots of site experience, aiding my understanding and knowledge when it comes to producing building regulations packages. Being on-site has given me insight into the procedures, processes and conversations that happen as an architect during the construction phase. As a Part 1, my aim is to become a well-rounded architect by gaining experience and knowledge across as many sectors as possible.
2. What drew you to BTP in the first place?
What initially drew me to BTP was the people who work here and the culture within the practice. There’s a strong social side to the office which makes it an enjoyable place to work. At the same time, the work itself is meaningful. The projects we work on sit within interesting and valuable sectors that focus on important architectural considerations.
Outside of the office, we do plenty together. From the annual office and lads ski trip, the occasional round of golf and a planned trip to Bilbao in the summer (for architectural purposes of course).
3. What has been your favourite project at BTP?
The Salix Roof Refurbishments project has probably been the most valuable project I’ve worked on so far. I’ve been involved from the opening-up works through to producing the building regs packages for over 30 properties, this has really helped develop my technical drawing skill set. I’ve had the chance to attend client meetings, liaise with the structural team, and we’re currently lining up a meeting with the planning officer. It’s been great to get that level of exposure so early in my career.
I’m looking forward to seeing the project progress on-site and to continue help deliver homes that provide a greater level of comfort.
4. If you weren’t an Architectural Assistant, what would you do?
I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to be an architect, so it’s quite a difficult question. My interest in construction and understanding how things are physically built would have kept me within the industry. I imagine I would be working in some kind of contracting or developer role. I know it’s something I’d enjoy as it’s a practical job, and it would give me the chance to have a moan back at the architects!
5. What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Something that often surprises people about me is that I have a soft spot for producing drawings and artwork. During my A-level studies I carried out an investigation into the streets of Manchester, exploring the juxtaposition between the architecture and the people living and making a living on those same streets producing fine liner, graphite, and oil paint pieces.
