Project Description

Design of two nursing homes for elderly persons with dementia

We were appointed as architects on a design and build contract to deliver two 60-bed nursing homes for elderly patients with dementia on a brownfield site. The homes were commissioned to provide an excellent level of care in a residential setting and both incorporated landscaped courtyard features.

Key Features

  • Allowing freedom of resident movement/containment.
  • Providing hygiene/durability.
  • Offering a homely environment.
  • Protecting personal dignity/personal frailment.
  • Identifying risks to the project, innovating and mitigating risks. For example, electrical sub-station and high voltage cables.
  • Establishing a pragmatic, sustainable and solutions focused fire strategy for the core and cluster model. This led to developing a new fire strategy concept for this type of building.
  • Providing less carbon emissions and less waste. Care homes in the past have not been 'green' buildings and have been expensive to heat.
  • Supporting the local authority to realise the benefits of quality residential care.
  • Low maintenance and low life cycle costs.
Client Testimonial

The architect for the scheme was excellent and working with BTP was first class, they were practical, cost conscious, capable, efficient, responsive and were a delight to work with.
