In the Spotlight: Interview with Mario Varricchio

1. What is your role at BTP?

I am an Architect at BTP with five years' experience, primarily working on residential projects. I joined the practice three months ago and have enjoyed getting to know the team while becoming involved in a variety of projects.

Throughout my career I've worked across different stages of the design and construction process, from developing initial concepts through to detailed technical design and supporting projects on site. I enjoy creating thoughtful, practical homes that respond to both the client's aspirations and the surrounding context, and I'm looking forward to continuing to broaden my experience across a range of sectors at BTP.

2. What drew you to BTP in the first place?

What attracted me to BTP was the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects within a supportive and collaborative team. From my first conversations with the practice, it was clear that there is a strong emphasis on delivering high-quality architecture while maintaining a friendly and approachable office culture.

Although I've only been here a few months, I've already felt welcomed by the team and have enjoyed getting involved in projects from the outset.

3. What has been your favourite project at BTP?

My favourite project so far has been a luxury new-build bungalow in Lancaster. It's an exciting project that has allowed me to contribute to the design of a bespoke home, balancing contemporary architecture with the client's vision and the character of the surrounding area.

I particularly enjoy the attention to detail involved in residential design and seeing how thoughtful architectural decisions can enhance the way people live. I'm looking forward to seeing the project develop as it progresses through the next stages.

4. If you weren't an Architect, what would you do?

I've always been interested in design and problem-solving, so I think I would still find myself in a creative profession. Perhaps I'd work in product or furniture design, where I'd still be able to combine creativity with technical thinking and develop practical solutions that people use every day.

5. What might someone be surprised to know about you?

Outside of work, I enjoy rock climbing and painting. Rock climbing is a great way to challenge myself both mentally and physically, while painting gives me a chance to slow down and express my creativity in a different way. Although they're very different hobbies, they both encourage patience, focus and problem-solving—qualities that also come in useful as an architect.
