Broadfield Road

We acted as architects on a design and build contract to create a landmark inner city social housing development on the site of former Edwardian baths in Moss Side.

The 1 ha. site is located within the dense urban grain of terraced housing in Moss Side, 0.5m south of Manchester City Centre.

Broadfield Road was previously occupied by a derelict Edwardian baths and wash house together with two rows of unoccupied terraced houses. It was viewed both by the client and City Council as an opportunity to stimulate the regeneration of this area of inner city Manchester.

Broadfield Road comprises 57 houses/flats and took its shape from density requirements as well as elliptical references to the site's former use as a swimming baths.

It was designed in a collaboration between architect and artist to create new urban blocks.

A public square was included where large family houses were situated. This provided a vision for the future in an area undergoing radical change.
